The beauty of mission work is that nothing is insignificant when the intent is to serve Christ with the whole heart. In my mind’s eye, this makes a bowl of soup a pot of gold. ❤️
1--I recently became a Benedictine Oblate, with the Benedictine Sisters of St Scholastica Priory in Petersham, MA. (We think highly of Joan Chittister, from Erie!)
2--Tomorrow night, it's vegetarian potsticker soup for us in our home, nourishing both body and soul.
This really resonated with me- I am also from Buffalo, though I have been in Rochester since ‘94, my husband works at the local Jesuit Highschool and I too grapple with how to best live out my faith/ yearning to contribute to a more just and inclusive world- with three (now grown) children and a hip that does not always want to stand at protests for two or three hours. I might be reaching out to you for more ideas and Substack fellowship. Thank you!
Curious where your spiritual director is. I’ve been to some at mercy prayer center. Also, I’d love to know if you have a recommendation for a good book on marriage from a progressive theologian. Harder to find that I would have thought. I look forward to connecting with you more! I really appreciated your piece about soup as a subversive action (!!)
I have no idea about a good book from a progressive theologian about marriage. I even asked a few folks and...crickets. You should write one.
I will say I LOVE "Gifts from the Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh (wife of early aviator Charles). I gift it as wedding presents. She uses her writing at the sea to talk about periods of marriage. It's a little dated but it's beautifully written.
Ooh! I think I read that years ago! I really liked it. I may need to re-read it. Thank you! And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who can’t seem to find a good marriage book from a progressive theological standpoint. I may need to ask Jeff Chu , Sarah Bessey or Shannon Evan’s if they’re up for a challenge (:
Thank you, Joanne. You have no idea how much this means to me, and I can’t really find the words to explain. Except to say it affirms and encourages what I have felt and decided I can do to be justice and mercy while being a pastor and mom. Blessings!
This made me laugh and cry. What a transformation and creative new vision.

I sent you a message about my spiritual director.

Sarah, not Joanne, my apologies to both.

All good and all full of challenges!
